Selected work. The multilingual typesetting was delivered as a specialist supplier to the language service providers holding these accounts; the design work is my own, direct with clients.

Looking for the story behind a project rather than the finished artefact? The case studies go into how the work was actually done.

Multilingual typesetting

Government, public health and education material, typeset for audiences who do not read the language it was written in.

One fixed layout, twenty-eight scripts: Amharic, Arabic, Cambodian, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Cree, Dari, Farsi, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Korean, Oji-Cree, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Serbian, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Tagalog, Tamil, Ukrainian, Urdu and Vietnamese. Latin, Arabic, CJK, Indic, Cyrillic, Greek and Canadian Indigenous syllabics, every one reflowed to fit the same sheet.

The personalised “My Food Guide” tool, typeset across a dozen languages including three right-to-left: Arabic, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), Farsi, French, Korean, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Tamil and Urdu.

An awareness brochure adapted into Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish and Tagalog for distribution across Canadian communities.

An information package for students and parents, typeset in Arabic. A full right-to-left layout flip: bullets, tables, callouts and reading order all reversed, not simply right-aligned.

A newcomer settlement information package typeset in Farsi, Mandarin and Korean: one right-to-left script and two that need different line-breaking rules from English.

An investment brochure typeset into Japanese, matching the original layout while accommodating very different line-break behaviour.

Design

Twenty years of identity and web work, much of it for clients who needed a brand that would survive being translated.

Identity and logos

Wordmarks and identities built to stay legible when the name has to be redrawn in another script, which is where most logos quietly fall apart. Click any mark to see it full size.
